Motorized Pipe Cutter

Redesigning the traditional pipe cutter to create a faster, more ergonomic experience for electricians.

This project reimagines the traditional pipe cutter using a motorized cutting mechanism designed to reduce hand strain, simplify the cutting process, and improve efficiency for electricians working with electrical piping.

Research & immersion

Rob is a 1995 UC DAAP graduate and the Head Electrician at Heritage Bank Center, where he builds custom electrical boxes for the facility.

After years of using manual, hand-powered tools, Rob developed carpal tunnel syndrome, making repetitive tasks like cutting pipe increasingly difficult.

His firsthand experience with these tools helped identify an opportunity to make pipe cutting more efficient while reducing strain on the user's hands.
